Mick Sinclair

Position:
Assistant Brand Manager (FOX and Oakley) and Athlete Manager Monza Imports/FOX. Also manages brother Cameron Sinclair.

Nickname: Sincs
Age: 26
Lives: Pakenham, VIC
Greatest racing achievement: “Winning a Victorian State MX Title as a junior.”

DBP: How did you land your job?
Sincs: “I had known Scott Runcimen (Brand Manager of FOX) for a few years through a company I had worked for previously. Monza Imports was expanding rapidly and my position became available and Scotty called me out of the blue one day. I was stoked that I was given the opportunity to come in for an interview and a few weeks later I was lucky enough to get the job. That was almost two years ago now.”

DBP: What do you love most about working as an Assistant Brand Manager/Athlete Manager?
Sincs: “Over the last two years I’ve grown to be really passionate about the brand. FOX is the market leader in Off-Road Motorcycling Apparel and it’s great to be a part of it. I’ve been around motocross racing since I was four-years-old so it’s natural for me to love going to the races. Now it’s a part of my job. I travel to every National Motocross and Supercross event as well as many FMX and local MX events looking after the FOX sponsored athletes. It’s also just good to have some kind of FOX presence at the events. As I have a pretty full schedule, I don’t get much time to attend many of the Yamaha Australian Off-Road rounds but hopefully that will change soon. I’m really looking forward to Wonthaggi this weekend, it’s always great catching up with the off-road riders, as they are an awesome bunch of guys. Hopefully Hollis, or any of the FOX riders for that matter, can keep up the good form and end up on top of the box this weekend.”

DBP: What do you look for in a sponsored rider?

Sincs: “Well, in this day in age, it’s really all about sponsoring race teams. There are not many riders that have a factory ride that can have their own apparel deal. We are lucky to be associated with some great teams here in Australia, with the Ballard’s guys and the Christensen’s race team as well as CDR Yamaha for the Motocross series. Then we also have guys like Kirk Hutton who is also great for the brand. We sponsor around 400 riders Australia-wide through our dealer network. It’s a great program we have in place that helps out a lot of riders as well as reaps some great exposure for the brand.”

DBP: Why do you think it's important to support series like the Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship and Rockstar Energy Drink NSW MX Championship?
Sincs: “It’s important for us to support these events because of the amount of exposure they seem to be getting. The coverage the A4DE received this year was phenomenal and likewise for the AORC so far this year. It’s also really good to see a decent State Motocross Championship in NSW again. I know that Queensland, WA and Victoria have a strong state series so it’ll be good for the guys in NSW to have a state series they can be proud of and look forward to racing each year.”

DBP: Fox and Oakley, the brands you work with, are huge in the Australian market - what are your goals and plans for the brands in the future?
Sincs: “Well, the goal for FOX, I suppose, is to continue to be the market leader in the Off Road Motorcycling Apparel business. The 2009 range, which is due to hit the stores in October, looks incredible. FOX seem to be able to step it up each year, which is another reason why it’s the Number 1 brand in Motocross. For Oakley, I really want to expand the current team. We sit pretty good for riders on the Rockstar MX Nationals circuit, but we are lacking representation in the AORC. Hopefully I’ll get to speak to a few guys down at Wonthaggi on Sunday to get the ball rolling for next year.”

DBP: You also manage your brother, top freestyler Cam Sinclair, is it challenging representing a family member?
Sincs: “Yeah, I have a lot do with what Cam does, but it’s not challenging at all. We are pretty close and get along really well and he knows if I suggest something then it’s in his best interest and I’m not saying it just for the sake of it. He’s just had a set back with a badly broken collarbone and that has put him out of the DEW Action Sports tour in the US, but hopefully he’ll be all healed up in time for the X Games, which take place in LA in a few weeks. Hopefully he will stick the Double Back Flip and bring home Australia’s first ever X Games gold medal.”

DBP: Thanks heaps for your time.
Sincs: “Thank you.”
